Senate District 48: Deborah Dawkins

"I don’t just think – I know – supporting & enhancing funding for public education is the only way to improve Mississippi’s negative image. It doesn’t make sense to give enormous tax credits and other enticements to companies and corporations when they see the children of their employees will have to attend a failing school. As legislators, we have a responsibility to invest in our children and families by fully funding not only MAEP but also making certain our teachers have a decent salary."

Born in Dallas, Texas, Senator Deborah Dawkins has been a Mississippi resident for nearly 40 years. Dawkins received a Bachelor of Science in business administration and marketing from the University of Southern Mississippi. Additionally, she attended a British Studies Program at the London School of Economics during the summer of 1984. For the past 20 years, she has been a certified surgical technician.

Dawkins is also involved with several civic and community organizations including the American Association of University Women, the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association and the Human Rights Coalition. When she's not working or serving in the Legislature, she enjoys spending time with her two children and three grandchildren.
