House District 3: Janis Triplett Patterson

“Between my parents and me, we have 100 years of combined experience in education in Prentiss County, so I am a strong advocate for public education. I support funding for Pre-K and full funding of MAEP. I also support a meaningful teacher pay raise that matches the Southeastern average.”

A native of Prentiss County, Janis Patterson has served much of her life in education just like her parents. A graduate of Booneville High School, she received an Associate of Arts degree from Northeast Mississippi Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in education from the University of Mississippi and a Master of Arts in English from Atlanta University. She earned 30 additional graduate hours from the University of Mississippi for her Ph.D. in English.

Patterson taught English at Northeast Mississippi Community College for 27 years, and during
her last five years, she served as Academic Division Head for Languages and Humanities. By her retirement in June 2018, she had taught a total of 35 years. She served as president of the Mississippi Council of Teachers of English (MCTE), and she served on the Joint Advisory Committee for the State Superintendent of Education.

A member of Gamma Chapter of Kappa Kappa Iota, Patterson serves as a board member of the Prentiss County Electric Power Association (PCEPA) and the George E. Allen Library. She previously served on the Booneville Chamber of Commerce and the Renasant Board.

Patterson was a long-time member of Beckley Chapel C.M.E. Church of Booneville before joining Mount Zion Community Church in Guntown. She has one daughter, Alison Ellice Patterson, who attended Booneville schools; graduated from the Mississippi School of Math and Science; received a Bachelor of Art in biology from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts; and earned a Master of Science in management studies from Boston University. Ellice is the founder and director of Abilities Dance Boston, a nonprofit professional dance organization for dancers of all abilities.
